The Thrill of Love

Thursday 26th Mar 2015
7:30 pm

ImpAct Theatre in their new production by Amanda Whittington.

This is a very modern piece of theatre set to a background of a Billie Holiday soundtrack - it has a feel of a 1950's black & white movie - is very stylised and choreographed and although Ruth Ellis was remembered as the last woman to be hanged in this country it is much more about her life.

A divorcee with a young child to care for - she meets the wealthy womanising, David, a racing driver with whom she becomes obsessed.

Fame comes - but not in the way she imagined.

Why does their relationship end in murder ?
Why does she plead not guilty - but offer no defence ?
Why does she show no remorse ?
And who is she trying to protect ?

The Thrill of Love, Amanda Whittington's gripping new play - dramatises the true story of Ruth Ellis, and takes a fresh look at the woman behind the headlines.

First performed by the New Vic Theatre in February 2013.

This production is recommended for ages 16+.

Leaves on a Line

Forest Forge Theatre Company

Two individual stories. Two lives connected by one moment.

A baby is abandoned on a deserted railway platform, there is a young woman who decides to give up her baby and an older woman who finds it. A decision that derails and changes the direction of both their lives.

2015. A re-opened heritage railway station. When Liz receives an unexpected message, she is presented with the chance to live a life she rejected decades ago. This could be her moment; this could be just what she’s been waiting for. But should she first reveal the secret she has kept for twenty-one years?

1994. A railway station facing closure. Catherine is eagerly waiting for her new life to begin but an unexpected visitor forces her towards an unfamiliar destination and a future she did not anticipate. Twenty-one years later, she returns to the same railway station and is confronted by the past she has turned her back on.

At the centre of both plays is Tom, the model railway enthusiast. Tom, who’s been reading other people’s letters. Tom who’s also Sam.

Using a range of theatrical styles and storytelling devices, this quirky and playful ensemble piece tells the story of our relationship to the past and to the future and the constantly changing nature of our hopes and dreams. The abandoned railway lines, heritage stations and derelict platforms of Hampshire’s railway history form the backdrop of this new play.

Metis and Enkelados

Metis and Enkelados or Not waiting for Godot
or The Meaning of Life continued

A conceptual musical stage play in 5 acts by Martin Szalla, the first performance ever.

What’s it all about?
Good question.

It’s about two people looking for something to happen.
Then lots of things happen.
And there will be music most of the time.

And, yes, a woman reading the paper, some other people doing weird things, a railway ticket agent, a vicar, some children, philosophers, maybe a bricklayer.

And what is a ‘conceptual’ stage play?
You’ll see.

The main part of the play is about two people, Metis (a middle-aged woman) and Enkelados (a young man), who have absolutely no energy and no idea what life is all about, they don’t even know their names. Sitting around they realize that they are waiting for something to happen. Then they decide to go on a train to somewhere. Lots of things happen, they meet many people who try to convince them of something, they go to different venues, but they are still not satisfied or even moved at all until...

All the while there will be music, and many other people are doing different things like reading, talking, painting, working or even acting.

And what is it all about? It’s about the meaning of life, politics, religion, literature, philosophy, art, reality and maybe some other issues.

As You Like It

Wednesday 3rd Jun 2015 - Friday 5th Jun 2015
7:30 pm

SISATA presents William Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT

Set in a distant futuristic nation amid a turbulent court, young love and new loyalties rise under the watchful dark eyes of a powerful hierarchy, threatening its hold and restrictive traditions.

As pressure builds the only refuge is the freedom and dream of Arden but like most dreams and dreamers the line between reality and illusion is never far from the surface as mischief and melancholy abound, gender roles are reversed and villainy and determination clash with playfulness and romance.

Presented in a contemporary production which sees the genders reversed four actors play multiple roles in what is an enigmatic and fast paced telling of confusion, love and revenge as they explore what it truly means to be ourselves.

Our interactive and engaging performances aim to make Shakespeare interesting and enjoyable to all ages, and hopefully encourage an enthusiasm for the Bard’s timeless tales.

‘Superb – theatre at its best – a must see’

‘Excellent adaptation, both modern and fun'

Canterbury Tales

Friday 3rd Jul 2015 - Friday 10th Jul 2015
7:30 pm

After the great success of the professional Wessex Actors Company’s (WAC’s) production of ‘Private Lives’ at various Dorset venues in 2014, including Swanage’s Mowlem Theatre, they’re pleased to announce this year’s production of Canterbury Tales - not the pure Chaucer original, but a version created by Phil Woods and Michael Bogdanov.  It’s extremely funny and a little bit rude at times, but nothing you can’t bring your granny to!  The cast is 7 strong and these 7 will take on about 50 roles. They will each take a tale to tell and then perform various supporting roles in each other’s “Tale” in this ‘normal’ English language version of the old classic.

Bawdy, anarchic and lots of fun, this modern version of Chaucer’s medieval classic takes the form of a storytelling competition.  Set in the present, with each tale as a stand-alone piece, linked by a Master of Ceremonies, the approach is deliberately un-academic with the aim still being to entertain, but with all the spirit of the original’s sense of chivalry and satire.

This year’s production will be produced at The Mowlem Theatre on two Fridays as part of WAC’s Dorset tour and ‘we’re delighted to be able to perform in this great traditional theatre’, says Artistic Director Jo Puttick.
